DEXA Bone Densitometry
Bone densitometry (DEXA) is a simple, quick, non-invasive scan that measures bone density and can identify early signs of osteoporosis. At Radiant Medical Systems, DEXA results help you and your physician understand your bone health.

Understanding DEXA Scanning
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) uses a low dose of radiation to produce images of your lower spine and hips. It can detect small changes in bone density, which can help identify osteoporosis at an early stage, before a fracture occurs.

Candidates for Bone Density Exams
Bone density testing is often recommended for certain groups to detect bone loss earlier. Detecting bone loss early gives you and your healthcare provider time to consider treatment and lifestyle options.
- Women age 65 and older, men age 70 and older
- Postmenopausal women under 65 with risk factors
- Anyone with a family history of osteoporosis
- Those with a history of fractures from minor falls
- Long-term users of medications that affect bone density
- Individuals with thyroid conditions or rheumatoid arthritis
Detecting Osteoporosis Early
Severe osteoporosis is often identified late, after a fracture or noticeable curvature has already occurred. DEXA scanning can detect bone loss at an earlier stage, giving you and your healthcare provider time to consider next steps. Results can also help monitor response to osteoporosis treatment over time.

A Quick, Comfortable Experience
A DEXA scan is quick and straightforward. The scan typically takes 10–15 minutes, requires no special preparation, and involves no injections or enclosed spaces. You will lie on a padded table while the scanner passes over your body. Results are sent to your referring provider.
